Mariners Winter League Update (Nov. 9-15)

  • LHP Ryan Horstman has allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4 over 8.1 scoreless innings in 8 relief appearances for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League. He has limited opponents to a .192 (5×26) average, including a .143 (3×21) clip vs. right-handed batters.
  • LHP James Paxton is 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA (12 ER, 24.1 IP) in 6 starts with the Javelina’s. He has limited opponents to .293 (26×83) average, while walking 8 and striking out 22 batters. In his last start he recorded the win in Peoria’s 6-5 victory at Salt River on Nov. 11 (4.0,3,2,2,4,5,HR).
  • After allowing 2 runs in his first appearance with Peoria, LHP David Rollins has allowed only 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 4 over his last 7 games (6.2 IP).
  • 1B/OF Kyle Petty has hit safely in 12 of 14 games, including 6 multi-hit contest with Adelaide. Overall he is batting .393 (22×56) with 12 runs scored, 4 doubles, 5 home runs, 17 RBI, 2 walks and 5 stolen bases in 14 games with the Bite in the ABL. He has recorded at least 1 hit and drove in at least 1 run in each of his last 7 games, batting .444 (12×27) with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 home runs and 14 RBI. Petty currently leads the Australian Baseball League in home runs (5), slugging percentage (.732), total bases (41) and HR/AB (1/11.20), while also ranking T1st in hits (22), T2nd in RBI (17) and extra-base hits (9), 3rd in stolen bases (5), T4th in runs scored (12) and 4th in average (.400).
  • INF Jordan Cowan has hit safely in 7 straight games for Adelaide, batting .414 (12×29) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 7 RBI, 1 walk and 4 stolen bases. Overall in 14 games, Cowan is batting .323 (20×62) with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 7 RBI, 2 walks and 8 stolen bases. He leads the ABL in stolen bases (8), while ranking T3rd in at-bats (62), 5th in hits (20) and 9th in average (.333).
  • RHP Kody Kerski is 0-1 with 3 saves and a 1.93 ERA (1 ER, 4.2 IP) in 6 relief appearances with the Bite.
  • LHP Vidal Nuño is 5-1 with a 2.13 ERA (9 ER, 38.0 IP) in 6 starts with Tigres de Aragua in the Venezuelan Winter League. He has limited opponents to a .229 (32×140) average, while walking 5 and striking out 25. In his last start on Nov. 15, Nuño (7.0,7,4,2,0,6) earned his 5th win as Aragua defeated Margarita 5-4. Nuño is currently tied for the lead in the VWL in wins, while ranking 3rd in WHIP (0.97), 5th in innings pitched (38.0) 6th in ERA (2.13). Also among VWL starters he ranks 2nd in fewest baserunners per 9.0 innings (8.76) and in lowest walk per 9.0 inning ratio (0.95).
  • SS Ketel Marte made his 2015 Winter League debut with Gigantes del Cibao in the DWL on Nov. 9. He has hit safely in 4 of his first 5 games, batting .211 (4×19) with 3 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases.
  • RHP Stephen Landazuri is 4-1 with a 3.24 ERA (12 ER, 33.1 IP) in 5 starts with Aguilas de Mexicali in the Mexican Winter League. He has limited opponents to .260 average (30×131), while walking 4 and striking out 33.
  • RHP Osmer Morales has appeared in 11 games with Lara in the VWL, going 1-1 with a 1.50 (3 ER, 18.0 IP). He has limited opponents to a .161 (10×62) average, while walking 8 and striking out 17. Over his last 7 relief appearances he has allowed only 1 earned run over 14.0 innings (0.64 ERA), while allowing only 5 hits, 6 walks and striking out 11.


The Quarter Finals for the Premier 12 Tournament begin today with the Semi Finals Nov. 18-20 and the Finals on Nov. 21. All 5 of the Mariners prospects currently playing in the 2015 WBSC Premier 12 tournament, have moved into the Quarter Finals. Outfielders Gareth Morgan and Tyler O’Neill are currently representing Team Canada, RHP Emilio Pagan and LHP Nick Valenza are on Team Puerto Rico and INF Gianfranco Wawoe is on the Team Netherlands roster.

The first-ever WBSC Premier 12 will determine the best overall National Team. Nations have qualified for the 2015 WBSC Premier12 based on their Top 12 finish in the final 2014 WBSC Baseball World Rankings, which are based on the performance of each country’s U-12, U-15, U-18, U-21 and men’s National Teams in official international competitions sanctioned by WBSC. The men’s National Teams from the Top 12 nations earned the right to have their top players compete in Japan and Taiwan on this head-to-head 2015 WBSC Premier 12 stage, which will run from 8-21 November.

Andy McKay was named the Mariners Director of Player Development on Oct. 21. McKay comes to Seattle from the Colorado Rockies where he has been Peak Performance Coordinator for the Rockies minor league system since September of 2012.  Prior to joining the Rockies, Andy was the Head Baseball Coach at Sacramento City College for 14 seasons (1999-2012). He compiled a record of 427-205-2 (.675) with 8 League Titles, and finished in the top-3 in the State of California 3 times, including 1 State Championship. He was the Assistant Coach at Sacramento City College from 1994-1998, after spending one season as a Player/Coach at the University of Tampa in 1993. Tampa won the Division II National Title in his only season there. McKay has also coached in the summers in the Cape Cod League and the Northwoods League.  The Sacramento native, is a graduate of Del Campo HS (Sacramento), Sacramento City College and Sacramento State University. He earned his MBA in Organizational Behavior Studies from Sacramento State in 1996. In addition to coaching at Sacramento City College, McKay taught classes in Physical Education and Business.
