Leonys Martin Excited About Seattle

Mariners new center fielder Leonys Martin arrived in camp this morning and took a few minutes to chat with the media that was in Peoria. He talked about various subjects including his trade from Texas to Seattle, his health, playing winter ball and his relationship with Nelson Cruz. As you’ll see in the above video, he’s very excited about playing in Seattle.

Position Players Are On Field Too

Position players don’t report until the 24th, but several of them have already arrived and are taking part in voluntary workouts. Above you’ll see some familiar swings in Stefen Romero and Kyle Seager, as well as some new ones in Leonys Martin and Dae Ho Lee.  First base coach Casey Candaele also spent some time working with the outfielders.

Baseball’s Magic Mud is used on every ball during Spring Training. If you happen to catch a foul ball or home run during workouts, odds are they were rubbed by bullpen catcher Fleming Baez and BP pitcher Nasusel Cabrera. They use the special rubbing mud on each baseball before it gets taken out to the field. As you’ll see in the pictures above, there’s a big difference in appearance from the brand new ones, to the workout ready baseballs.

Ken Griffey Jr., who last month was voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, was on hand for Sunday’s Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway where he was serving as the honorary starter for the 58th running of the The Great American Race. Below are several tweets that captured part of his experience.

Normally, seeing a scout during Spring Training is nothing to write home about, but if you’ve followed the blog for a few years, you’ll recognize this one…Scout, the dog from Redmond, WA, is now 5 1/2 years old and attending his fifth Spring Training. His owner, Dave, also from Redmond, says that they spend the winters in Arizona before making their way back to the Northwest. It’s always nice to see Scout (and Dave) in Peoria.

Mariners Minor League Mini Camp

Director of Player Development Andy McKay, in his first season with the Mariners, will lead the mini-camp and it will also be one of the first opportunities for him to evaluate players in the system. The Mariners have conducted a winter program for their minor league players for years, but this is the seventh year for a structured mini-camp that features the organizations top prospects that are not already in Major League camp. The players went through physicals yesterday, with the first workout today at the Peoria Sports Complex.
