MARINERS AT DODGERS RECAP
In the first matchup between Japanese countrymen Hisashi Iwakuma and Kenta Maeda, the two starting pitchers dueled into the fifth inning, but it ultimately came down to a battle of the bullpens with the Mariners prevailing over the Dodgers, 6-3, at Camelback Ranch.
Making his 4th start of the spring, Iwakuma allowed 3 runs on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 in 4.1 innings pitched. Mike Montgomery (0.2 IP), Tony Zych (1.0 IP) and Donn Roach (3.0 IP) combined to hold the Dodgers scoreless in relief. Montgomery earned the win in relief to improve to 1-0.
The Mariners quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as the first three batters recorded base hits. Ketel Marte led off the game with a double to right field, followed by a Luis Sardiñas single to left. Robinson Canó then drove in both Marte and Sardinas with a two-run single.
Los Angeles got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Justin Turner. Turner accounted for all three of the Dodgers runs, driving in Yasiel Puig on a double in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 2-2 and giving Los Angeles a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on another double.
Montgomery entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on second and one out. After yielding a walk to the first batter he faced, Montgomery came back with a fly ball and a strikeout to end the inning.
The Mariners connected for back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead over Los Angeles. With Marte and Sardiñas aboard, Nelson Cruz belted his second home run of the spring into the Dodgers left field bullpen. Adam Lind promptly followed with his second home run in Cactus League action to cap the Mariners scoring in the inning.
Zych struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in the sixth inning, his 4th consecutive outing with multiple strikeouts and 5th overall this spring. Roach tossed 3.0 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts to earn his first save of the spring. In his last 3 outings, Roach has posted 8.0 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts.
The Mariners (10-11-2) have their first off day of the Cactus League schedule tomorrow. Left-hander James Paxton is slated to start in a minor league game tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Seattle returns to play Wednesday, March 23 at 7:10 pm against the Oakland Athletics at Peoria Stadium. Right-hander Nathan Karns is scheduled to face Athletics right-hander Jesse Hahn. ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR BASEBALL
KUMA MEETS THE MEDIA
As he does following each outing, Hisashi Iwakuma met with both U.S. and Japanese media after his start at Los Angeles today. The media crew was especially interested in getting his thoughts on going up against the Dodgers Kenta Maeda. The pair train together in the offseason and this is the first time that they have faced each other on the mound.
