Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 40

Tuesday, March 29, 2016 / 6 Days ’til Opening Day (April 4 at Texas Rangers)

Game RecapThe Mariners had their 5-game winning streak snapped in a 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians in front of 5,382 fans on Tuesday night at Goodyear Ballpark. Taijuan Walker allowed 3 runs on 6 hits over 5.0 innings and took the loss to fall to 1-3 this spring.

The Mariners trailed Cleveland 3-0 after three innings. The Indians got on the board in the bottom of the first on a Yan Gomes sacrifice fly. Gomes connected for a two-home run in the bottom of the third to extend Cleveland’s lead to 3-0.

Seattle and Cleveland traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth when the Indians added a run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Mariners scored their lone run of the ballgame when Zach Shank led off the top of the ninth with an infield single and scored on Daniel Robertson’s two-out single up the middle. Robertson now has 11 RBI in Cactus League action, 4th-best on the club.

Norichika Aoki went 1-for-3 and has now hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games since March 10. Aoki is batting .333 (14×42) with 9 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 RBI and 3 walks during that stretch.

Making his 6th start of the spring, Walker allowed at least one baserunner in each of the first four innings, but limited the damage to just 3 runs. Walker retired seven of the last nine batters he faced. Mayckol Guaipe (6th) and Mike Montgomery (7th) each pitched 1.0 scoreless inning in relief.

Today turned out to be Superhero day at Mariners camp, as Nelson Cruz and Robinson Canó brought in T-shirts for the entire team. With so many superheroes, not everybody knew which superhero they were representing. Leonys Martin had never heard of Deadpool. Below are a few close-ups from today’s fun.

Now that you’ve checked out the Mariners commercials for this season, I hope you remember the phone number for Nellie’s Auto Glass. Unfortunately for windshields everywhere, Nelson Cruz isn’t the only player who can hit the ball a long ways. Today, Adam Lind found his target. What’s that number again?

Shannon Jersey

It happens every year…someone heads to the game and forgets their jersey. So what happens when you forget your game jersey? Someone has to come to the rescue…and today it was Shannon Drayer.

710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny O’Neil, Dave Wyman and Jim Moore continued their week in Mariners camp today and today they checked in with closer Steve Cishek, outfielder Leonys Martin and General Manager Jerry Dipoto. Be sure to check out the podcasts of the interviews on
