Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Ariel Miranda from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for left-handed pitcher Wade Miley.
“Ariel Miranda is a power left-handed pitcher with a four-pitch mix that is Major League ready that provides us with flexibility,” Dipoto said. “We are very excited for what he can bring to the Mariners.”
Miranda, 27, is 4-7 with a 3.93 ERA (44 ER, 100.2 IP) in 19 starts with AAA Norfolk this season. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-hander has struck 87 while walking just 31. Over his last 7 starts with Norfolk dating back to June 18, Miranda is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA (9 ER, 42.0 IP) with 33 strikeouts and 11 walks. Earlier this season on July 3 at Seattle, Miranda made his Major League debut, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts over 2.0 innings pitched.
In 2015, Miranda combined for a record of 6-3 with a 3.60 ERA (28 ER, 70.0 IP) with 71 strikeouts and 26 walks in 14 combined starts with the GCL Orioles, A Frederick and AA Bowie. Miranda was named Carolina League pitcher of the Week for the week of July 13-19, 2015 after going 1-0 with a 0.81 ERA (1 ER, 11.0 IP) with 13 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 starts for A Frederick.
A native of Havana, Cuba, Miranda originally signed with Baltimore as a non-drafted free agent on May 27, 2015. Miranda pitched seven seasons in the Serie Nacional Cuban League, compiling a career record of 22-25 with a 3.78 ERA (162 ER, 386.0 IP) with 274 strikeouts and 151 walks in 80 career games, including 64 starts.
Miley, 29, is 7-8 with a 4.98 ERA (62 ER, 112.0 IP) in 19 starts with the Mariners this season. He won his start yesterday, allowing one run in 7.0 innings against Chicago-NL at Wrigley Field. He is 1-6, 4.46 (20 ER, 40.1 IP) in his last 7 starts, after beginning the season 6-2, 5.27 (71.2 IP, 42 ER) in his first 12 starts.
Miley has a career mark of 56-54 with a 4.07 ERA (427 ER, 944.1 IP) in 157 career appearances (153 starts) with Arizona, Boston and Seattle. Seattle acquired Miley on Dec. 7, 2015 (with RHP Jonathan Aro) from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for RHP Carson Smith and LHP Roenis Elias.
“We are appreciative of everything that Wade did for the Mariners organization, culminating with his best performance of the season yesterday against the Chicago Cubs, one of the best teams in the league,” Dipoto said. “We are glad that Wade can go from one team in playoff contention to another, and to a division that he has had success in during his career. This decision is the best move for the Mariners present and future.”
