Peterson & Rollins Named to AFL Fall Stars Game

AZL

The Arizona Fall League’s 10th annual Fall Stars Game Presented by Bowman Baseball Cards will be played at 6:08 p.m. AZ (8:08 p.m. ET) this Saturday, November 7 at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Scouting and farm directors from every Major League organization, in consultation with Arizona Fall League Director Steve Cobb and his baseball personnel staff, selected the players for the annual showcase that pits top prospects from the Fall League’s East Division and West Division clubs.

The Mariners will be represented on the West Division club by infielder D.J. Peterson and left-handed pitcher David Rollins.

The contest will be nationally televised by MLB Network and online via MLB.com. Paul Severino (play-by-play), Joe Magrane (game analyst), and Jim Callis (prospect analyst) will call the game. The MLB Radio Network also will carry the game on Sirius/XM satellite radio. Mike Ferrin will offer play-by-play.

For those who didn’t see the link on Mariners.com last week, MLBpipeline.com had an AFL report on the Mariners where they featured Peterson and Tyler O’Neill. Check it out below.

Mariners outfield prospect Stefen Romero wasn’t in the starting lineup for the West squad in the 2013 Arizona Fall League All-Star game, but that didn’t stop him from having a great performance. Romero entered the game in the 6th inning and went 2-for-2 with 2 home runs (both to the opposite field) with 3 RBI.

In a story by MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo, Romero talked about his big performance.

“I was just trying square the ball up,” said Romero, who helped the West beat the East, 9-2. “Coming in, I knew we were up early. I felt like they were going to try to get ahead of me early. Luckily, my first at-bat, I jumped on a fastball right away up in the zone. Luckily, it went out, a wall-scraper. Second at-bat, I just wanted to be a little more patient. Fortunately, he got a slider up and I did the same thing.”

Here is a video from MLB.com of Romero’s home runs:

Eight Mariners Selected to Play in Arizona Fall League

Major League Baseball today announced the rosters for the Arizona Fall League, and eight players in the Mariners organization will play for the Peoria Javelinas.

Mike Zunino has combined to bat .367 with 13 home runs and 40 RBI in his first 40 professional games with Everett and Jackson.

“We are extremely proud with the seasons each of these players have had this year and look forward to seeing all of them compete in the Arizona Fall League,” said Mariners Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn. ” The Arizona Fall League allows each player to set goals and work on individual areas of their game, while competing against some the top prospect in the minor leagues.”

In addition to the eight Mariners players, Jackson (AA) pitching coach Lance Painter will serve on the Javelinas coaching staff.

Opening Day for the 20th Anniversary season of the AFL is set for Tuesday, Oct. 9. The six-team league, owned and operated by Major League Baseball, plays six days per week (Monday-Saturday) in six Cactus League stadiums in the Phoenix area — Mesa Hohokam Stadium (Solar Sox), Peoria Sports Complex (Javelinas), Phoenix Municipal Stadium (Desert Dogs), Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (Rafters), Scottsdale Stadium (Scorpions) and Surprise Stadium (Saguaros). Daily start times are 12:35 p.m. and 6:35 p.m., and games can be followed online at MLB.com.
