Mariners Mondays – Two Pitching Gems

Felix Hernandez after throwing the first Perfect Game in Mariners history Aug. 15, 2012 vs. Tampa Bay.

This week on Mariners Mondays on ROOT SPORTS, two Mariners pitching gems – the June 8 combined no hitter against the Dodgers and Felix Hernandez’s perfect game August 15 vs. Tampa Bay.

Although that night’s starter Kevin Millwood was throwing well, he left in the sixth inning with an injury. His teammates stepped up, and when it was over, five Mariners pitchers had matched Millwood’s form. Relievers Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen combined on the final three innings for the Mariners third no-hitter in the team’s 35-year history.

If the no-hitter was unusual, Felix’s perfecto was one for the record books.

It was a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Safeco Field for the matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays, and Felix was on, thoroughly dominating the Rays. He went to a three-ball count on only three hitters (Ben Zobrist, Sam Fuld and Matt Joyce). B.J. Upton hit a hard grounder in the seventh that shortstop Brendan Ryan scooped up, getting Upton at first.

By then, the buzz in the ballpark and around town was building. Rays skipper Joe Maddon even tried to get in Felix’s head when he got tossed for arguing a called strike. It didn’t work. Felix finished off the Rays with 12 strikeouts for the first perfect game in Mariners history.

Relive the thrill of that amazing game, as well as the combined no-hitter on ROOT SPORTS on Monday at 7:30pm after a special two-part Mariners All Access–Tricks of the Trade starting at 6:30pm.
