Ken Griffey Jr. New Conference In Seattle

Junior HOF

As you all know, Ken Griffey Jr. was elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Following a whirlwind of commitments in New York, including the Hall of Fame News Conference, appearances on MLB Network and the New York Stock Exchange, The Kid is heading to Seattle.

Junior will join Seattle credentialed media at Safeco Field early this evening (approximately 5:30 pm depending on his flight) to discuss his election, the experiences of his last few days and of course his time in Seattle as a player.

Stay tuned to Mariners social media accounts and visit Mariners.com to watch live as Junior arrives.

Alvin Davis Checks In With MLB Network’s Hot Stove

Mr. Mariner Alvin Davis checked in this morning with Harold Reynolds and Matt Vasgersian on MLB Network’s Hot Stove. The trio covered plenty of ground as they talked about his Moose Clausen Community Service Award, the Toys for Kids Auction, the beginning of Ken Griffey Jr.’s Major League career and went head-to-head with Reynolds to see who could better remember their fellow teammates from the 1982 Lynn Sailors.

Wish Granted

Ken Griffey Jr., one of the most enthusiastic supporters of Make-A-Wish, is featured in a new book released this week called Wish Granted. The book, written by best-selling author and Sports Illustrated associate editor Don Yaeger, is about the personal experiences of 25 top athletes who have fulfilled wishes through the Make-A-Wish program.

In the book, Griffey talks about how he has been touched by the Wish kids he has met, especially as a Major League rookie not that much older than the kids. One boy, named Michael, who received a jersey from Griffey, was later buried in the jersey when he died.

Over the years, Griffey granted dozens of Wishes to children facing life-threatening illness. He never said no. No matter what else he was doing, Ken would drop everything and spend as much time with the child as possible.

Griffey is featured in the book along with such sports luminaries as Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Kurt Warner, Danica Patrick, and Grant Hill.

The book is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit Make-A-Wish programs across the country.

Happy Birthday Junior

For most Mariners fans,  you have vivid memories a young teenager running onto the field for the first time in 1989. And today The Kid is turning 44, my how time flies. So here is a big Happy Birthday wish to everyone’s favorite Mariner, Ken Griffey Jr. On social media, be sure to wish him a happy birthday, and if you have not done so, you must follow his Instagram account (trust us on this one)!

And here is another fun tidbit. Nov. 21 is also the birthday of Hall of Famer Stan Musial…and get this, both were born in Donora, Pennsylvania! What are the odds of that? Two Hall of Famers (Jr. is eligible for the HOF in 2016) born on the same day (Nov. 21) in the same small town outside of Cincinnati (49 years apart).

A Quick Thought About Ken Griffey Jr.

Griffey_02

The past weekend at Safeco Field was very special because of the return of Ken Griffey Jr. for his induction to the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame.  With Ken, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, Jay Buhner, Alvin Davis and Dan Wilson, the other members of the Mariners HOF, there was a lot of history on diamond.

Ken’s resume is filled with statistics, records, awards and accomplishments that are certainly Cooperstown-worthy, ranking among the best of all-time.  The many behind-the-scenes stories that were told were also highly entertaining.

There is one “baseball list” that may best capture the essence of Ken Griffey Jr. better than all the numbers and his place in the game’s history – that is the company that he keeps.  In 1999, Major League Baseball selected the All-Century Team, which included ten outfielders.  Take a few minutes to read and think about this list of players:

MLB All-Century Team – Outfielders

Hank Aaron

Ty Cobb

Joe DiMaggio

Mickey Mantle

Willie Mays

Stan Musial

Pete Rose

Babe Ruth

Ted Williams

And……………Ken Griffey Jr.

That pretty much says it all.
