Mariners Spring Training Games Begin Tomorrow
The past two weeks of workouts has been fun, but the real fun starts tomorrow. The Mariners open the Cactus League season with the Charity game against the San Diego Padres. Left-hander James Paxton will make the start against the Padres against left-hander Robbie Erlin. Be sure to tune in on 710 ESPN Seattle starting at 12:10 pm Seattle time. As you can see, the lineup is already posted. Looks good!
Domingo Ayala Signs With Mariners
If you’re not familiar with YouTube sensation Domingo Ayala, you can check out his Domingo Ayala YouTube page. Domingo was in Mariners camp today, spending time in the clubhouse and taking the field with the club, showing off his defensive prowess and his skills at the plate. Be sure to watch the video to check out highlights from his day including comments from GM Jerry Dipoto and Manager Scott Servais.

Felix Throws A Bullpen
Yes, Felix Hernandez threw a bullpen today which included several dozen offerings…but the highlight for Felix was looking over during his session and seeing Jamie Moyer in camp. Jamie will be here for roughly a week and will be followed by several former players throughout the spring.
Edgar And The Hall of Fame
A crew from the National Baseball Hall of Fame was in Mariners camp today and they spent time talking to Felix Hernandez, Edgar Martinez, Mike Hampton, Casey Candaele and Jamie Moyer about former teammates who are now in the Hall of Fame. Hopefully soon, the Hall of Fame crew will be going to different camps around the league talking to former teammate of Edgar.
Mariners Sign Cuban Outfielder Guillermo Heredia
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has signed outfielder Guillermo Heredia. The 25-year-old outfielder, who defected from Cuba in early 2015, played six seasons with Matanzas in the Serie Nacional Cuban League, where he hit .285 (336×1177) with 231 runs, 57 doubles, 15 triples, 23 home runs and 121 RBI in 374 games.
As a 21-year-old in the 2011-12 season, he broke through by hitting .343 with a.439 on-base percentage and a.527 slugging percentage in 443 plate appearances and won a Gold Glove award in center field.
Jamie Moyer Arrives In Camp
Jamie Moyer arrived in Mariners camp today and will be with the club working with pitchers for the next week. It is always good to have the left-hander in camp, and he won’t be the only former Mariners player that joins us this spring as Ken Griffey Jr., Jay Buhner and Julio Cruz will all make appearances.
MBC Sports Plus Visits Camp
MBC Sports Plus, a Korean TV outlet, was in camp to follow first baseman Dae-Ho Lee. The crew chatted with third base coach Manny Acta, hitting coach Edgar Martinez, Manager Scott Servais, GM Jerry Dipoto and of course, Dae-Ho Lee.

Truck Day 2016 – The Road To Peoria
A sure sign that spring, and Spring Training, are right around the corner, the equipment truck loaded up and hit the road today filled with everything from baseball equipment to jerseys to training equipment and office supplies.
The truck departed Safeco Field on its way to Peoria, Arizona for the 40th edition of Seattle Mariners Spring Training. The truck will make a couple of stops on its 1,506 mile journey to the Peoria Sports Complex.
When the truck arrives, it will be greeted by members of the Mariners Clubhouse crew who will spend a few days unpacking. Pitchers and catchers report to Peoria on Friday, February 19, and the position players arrive on February 24. The first full squad workout is Thursday, February 25.

Mariners Sign Five to Minor League Deals
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto today announced that the Mariners have signed the following players to minor league contracts with invitations to Spring Training.
- Mike Baxter, OF
- Casey Coleman, RHP
- Ed Lucas, INF
- Brad Mills, LHP
- Blake Parker, RHP
These obviously won’t be the only invites to Spring Training, but it’s a start. The remainder of the list will begin to trickle out in the coming weeks and we hope to have a full list out in January.
With that said, here are a few tidbits about the five that were signed this week.
Baxter, 31, spent last year in the Chicago Cubs organization, splitting time with AAA Iowa and the Chicago Cubs. In 34 games in the Majors, he hit .246 (14×57) with 6 runs, 1 double and 2 RBI. With Iowa, he hit .279 (62×222) with 31 runs, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run, 20 RBI and a .390 on-base percentage in 74 games. In parts of six Major League seasons with San Diego, New York (NL), Los Angeles (NL) and Chicago (NL), he has hit .228 (95×417) with 52 runs, 23 doubles, 4 triples, 4 home runs and 28 RBI in 232 games. During his minor league career, he has hit .280 (978×3494) with 528 runs, 208 doubles, 53 triples, 63 home runs, 423 RBI and a .355 on-base percentage. He was originally drafted by San Diego in the 4th round of the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN).
Coleman, 28, spent last season with AAA Omaha in the Kansas City Royals organization where he was 5-4 with a 4.92 ERA (45 ER, 82.1 IP) with 54 strikeouts in 33 games including 6 starts. In parts of four Major League seasons with Chicago-NL (2010-12) and Kansas City (2014), he is 8-13 with a 5.72 ERA (113 ER, 177.2 IP) with 123 strikeouts in 58 games including 26 starts. In eight minor league seasons, he has combined to go 50-30 with a 3.73 ERA (287 ER, 692.0 IP) with 467 strikeouts in 194 games including 90 starts. He was originally drafted by Chicago (NL) in the 15th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University (Fort Myers, FL).
Lucas, 33, spent last season with AAA Round Rock in the Texas Rangers organization where he hit .316 (124×393) with 43 runs, 17 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs, 48 RBI and a .389 on-base percentage in 107 games. In two Major League seasons, both with Miami (2013-14), he has combined to hit .255 (135×530) with 62 runs, 19 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 37 RBI in 163 games. In 12 minor league seasons in the Kansas City, Atlanta, Los Angeles (AL), Miami and Texas organizations, he has hit .282 (1058×3747) with 538 runs, 177 doubles, 24 triples, 72 home runs, 471 RBI and a .355 on-base percentage in 1,049 games. He was originally drafted by Kansas City in the 8th round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH).
Mills, 30, spent last season in the Oakland organization. He spent most of the season with AAA Nashville where he went 5-12 with a 4.52 ERA (69 ER, 137.1 IP) with 95 strikeouts in 24 starts. He made one appearance, a start, with Oakland. In parts of six Major League seasons with Toronto (2009-11, 2014), Los Angeles-AL (2012) & Oakland (2014, 2015), he is 4-4 with a 7.97 ERA (70 ER, 79.0 IP) with 71 strikeouts in 21 games including 14 starts. In nine minor league seasons, he is 59-58 with a 3.82 ERA (412 ER, 970.2 IP) with 826 strikeouts in 174 games including 165 starts. He was originally drafted by Toronto in the 4th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ).
Parker, 30, appeared in only three games with AAA Iowa before having surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow on June 16th. In parts of three Major League seasons with the Chicago Cubs, he is 2-3 with a 3.68 ERA (30 ER, 73.1 IP) with 85 strikeouts in 74 games, all in relief. In 2013, he posted a 2.72 ERA (14 ER, 46.1 IP) with 55 strikeouts in 49 relief appearances with the Cubs. In nine minor league seasons in the Cubs organization, he is 14-18 with a 2.86 ERA (122 ER, 383.1 IP) with 424 strikeouts in 295 relief appearances. He was originally drafted by Chicago (NL) in the 16th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, AR).

As you already know, the Mariners begin Cactus League action with the annual Charity Game against the Padres. Be sure to tune in to ROOT SPORTS to catch the action from Peoria Stadium. The Mariners will televise 16 games this spring including Wednesday and Thursday at 12:05 pm Seattle time. Here’s a full broadcast schedule for the spring.

Rick Rizzs, Dave Sims, Mike Blowers, Radio Engineer Kevin Cremin and Television Director Mark Engelbrekt arrived in camp and are ready to get started. As you’ll see below, Aaron Goldsmith had not made it to camp yet because he was in the process of dealing with an interesting situation.

Shortstop Chris Taylor jumped on the phone with KJR’s Mitch In The Morning Show and discussed his position battle with Brad Miller. He also talks about the positive outlook of the 2015 season and the addition of Nelson Cruz to the lineup. Check out the full interview here.

The Rain Arrives, Baseball Activities Continue:
The weather altered plans for the Mariners this morning. With the precipitation continuing to (pun definitely intended) rain down on the fields, the players moved their activities to the cages, the covered bullpens and the gym. Hisashi Iwakuma played long-toss in the rain and then moved over to toss his live batting practice (hitters not swinging). According to the Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish, Kuma accidentally hit prospect Gabby Guerrero between the shoulder blades with an errant pitch. Others joining him in throwing live BP included J.A. Happ and Danny Farquhar. Others throwing bullpens were Fernando Rodney, Yoervis Medina, Tom Wilhelmsen, Sam Gaviglio, Rafael Perez and Mayckol Guaipe.
Rain forced the Mariners to take cover.
The Instrasquad Game That Never Was:
The Mariners were supposed to play an intrasquad game today but the rains washed that away. If you’re interested, here are the lineups for the game that never was.

Dove Tail Bats:
The stream of bat companies in camp has continued and today it was Dove Tail Bats who arrived. Players got a chance to check out their products and see if they’d like to use their bats during the season.

Ah, He’s A Funny Guy:
Japanese comedian Zakiyama Yamazaki, one of the most popular funny men in Japan, stopped by camp today to chat with a few players and staff. He met pitching coach Rick Waits in the morning during stretch, chatted it up with Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano & Nelson Cruz after workouts and then interviewed Hisashi Iwakuma to complete his day.
Comedian Yamazaki Zakiyama was in Mariners camp today.
The Workout:
Felix Hernandez threw a bullpen session, Dominic Leone threw to live hitters, hitters took live and normal batting practice and pitchers worked on PFP. It was a short but productive day for the entire roster.

First Full Squad Workout:
The Mariners full squad took the field for workouts today and it gave fans a little bit of everything; hitting, pitching, fielding and the opportunity to meet some of their favorite stars.

After today’s workout, the Major League Players Association met with the Mariners to talk about any questions they might have had.

After the Players Association meeting with the players, Tony Clark, the MLBPA Executive Director, met with members of the Seattle media. He spoke about pace of game, the collective bargaining agreement and the process that goes into that.

Cactus League Lunch:
The annual Cactus League Luncheon and Press Conference took place today at the newly renovated Peoria Sports Complex, which is home to the Seattle Mariners. Hall of Fame players, elected officials and MLB and spring training staff were present for the induction of Cactus League Hall of Famers.

New Balance In Camp:
New Balance was in camp today to drop off some of their products for the players that wear their brand and also spent time with the players showing them some of the products that are still in development.

Until the position players take the field, more PFP down on the lower fields. Felix Hernandez, Roenis Elias, Mayckol Guaipe and others worked on fielding comebackers over on Field #4. They all looked pretty smooth with The King leading the way. The act of fielding grounders seems so simple, but it is still enjoyable to be out on the field watching the pros do it.
Kuma Throws A Bullpen:
Hisashi Iwakuma was among the pitchers who had a bullpen session this morning. He’s scheduled for another bullpen on Friday before facing hitters on Monday.

Robinson Cano Arrives:
Robinson Cano arrived in camp around noon today and took his physical, along with the rest of the position players. Following his physical, he met with the local media. You can read what he said on Mariners.com, SeattleTimes.com and TheNewsTribune.com and you can watch tonight on KING 5.

Cuba Represents:
Just before Roenis Elias did an interview in English with Chris Egan‘s KING 5, he chatted with Misael Siverio for a few minutes. As you might remember from back in November, Siverio signed with the club after leaving Cuba a few years ago. Siverio is currently taking part in minor league mini-camp before their Spring Training begins.

DINGER Bats In Camp:
Over the course of the spring, various vendors (including bats and gloves) show up at the Mariners complex. Today, it was DINGER Bats, which is based in Ridgway, Illinois. They set up just outside the clubhouse and were available to whoever wanted to check out their products. Minor leaguer Jabari Blash was one of the players who checked out the inventory.

Fernando Rodney also tossed his first bullpen of the spring and then spent a few minutes talking with the media about why he’s in good spirits.

More Bullpens:
Taijuan Walker was amongst the pitchers who tossed their second bullpens of the Spring. The group that went today is the same group that had a bullpen session on Saturday, the first day of pitchers and catchers workouts.

The Evaluators:
When pitchers are pitching, you can be sure that evaluators will be evaluating. Mariners Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn and Special Assistant to the GM Roger Hansen were on hand to check out pitchers fielding practice (as usual), and Dan Wilson checked in on the catchers during bullpen sessions.

First Day of Mini Camp:
The Mariners have conducted a winter program for their minor league players for years, but this is the sixth year for a structured mini-camp that features 41 of the organizations top prospects that are not already in Major League camp. The players went through physicals first thing this morning and were already out of the field at 2 pm in the afternoon. Mini Camp is designed to refine the skills of young players under the close eyes of that organization coaching staff. Like instructional league in fall, Mini Camp allows guys to carry over what they learned directly into the minor league season.
Mini Camp began today and will continue until March 8.
Among players taking part in the mini-camp included pitchers Edwin Diaz, Luiz Gohara, Daniel Missaki, Tyler Pike and Ryan Yarbrough and position players Joe DeCarlo, Gabby Guerrero, Austin Jackson, Gareth Morgan, Jack Reinheimer, Tyler Smith and Austin Wilson. Mini Camp will run through March 8.
Once Mini Camp concludes the rest of the organizational players will report for Minor League Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers report on March 9 and will have their first workout on March 11, while the position players will report March 14 with the full squad working out on March 16. Minor League Spring Training games run from March 21 through April 4 and will break camp and head to one of the Mariners four full season affiliations on April 7 and begin regular season games on April 9.
Willie Bloomquist on GMA…No, Not That GMA:
Arizona resident Willie Bloomquist was on Good Morning Arizona to talk about getting ready for Spring Training in the updated complex. In the video, you’ll also get some updates from Peoria’s Chris Calcaterra on the upgraded Peoria Stadium and from Mariners Safeco Field Team Store Manager Mary Beeman about the new and improved team store in Arizona.

MLB Network Checks In With Mariners:
Mariners General Manager Jack Zduriencik and Manager Lloyd McClendon both checked in with MLB Network this morning. Zudriencik was on the Hot Stove show with Harold Reynolds and Matt Vasgergian, while McClendon chatted with Sam Ryan.

KING 5 Has Arrived:
KING 5’s Chris Egan has arrived in Mariners camp so be sure to tune in to catch the latest highlights from camp. Egan will be in town for a while, checking in for one-on-ones with players and staff including McClendon and Taijuan Walker.

The position players have almost arrived, but the pitchers are still hard at work working on fielding drills and tossing bullpens. Spring Training Media Availability:
Each year, the general managers and field managers of all 15 Arizona-based Clubs in Spring Training are invited to participate in two separate hour-long periods of media availability. This year, they took place at the Arizona Biltmore and Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. was also available. The sessions serve as a preview of the 2015 season as Spring Training gets underway.

Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 3

The Workout:
Pitchers and catchers once again took the field for workouts, with all of them going through drills and shifting from field to field to work on different areas of their game. New and not-so-new Mariners are getting to know each other a little better, including left-handers Joe Saunders and J.A. Happ. Both lefties had their first bullpen sessions this morning.

Speaking of Bullpens:
Another group of pitchers had their first bullpen sessions today including Saunders, Happ, Hisashi Iwakuma, Rafael Perez, Danny Farquhar and Charlie Furbush. The most intriguing bullpen session was left-hander Danny Hultzen who is healthy after battling an injury last season. “The whole process went smoother than I thought, having talked to people who’d had arm surgeries and gone through a lot of ups and downs,” said Hultzen to MLB.com’s Greg Johns. “Luckily I never really went through that, knock on wood. I felt good the entire time and didn’t have any major setbacks or anything like that.”

Hisashi Iwakuma tossed his full bullpen and afterwards, was available to the media. As you’ll see below, the Japanese media contingent also wanted to get Manager Lloyd McClendon‘s thoughts on the right-hander.

So You Think You Can Dance…As Good as Fernando?:
As you know, players come to Spring Training to get ready for the season. While players like Fernando Rodney are serious about getting their work in, he also knows how to have fun. At several points during the workout, he paused for a dance break.

As you may have noticed, the Mariners Vision production crew is in town talking to each player and filming some videos for the board. Check out the video to see how they set up the green screen room.

University of Washington Huskies vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys:
The Huskies were in town and played against Oklahoma State in the final game at Peoria Stadium before the Mariners Cactus League schedule begins. Unfortunately, the Huskies dropped a 12-2 decision. Oklahoma State alum and current Mariners video coordinator Jimmy Hartley was at the game and shared this photo on Instagram.
