Felix Facts
With the 2014 season now completed, we put the following information together on Felix Hernandez and his amazing season. We are hopeful Felix will win his second American League Cy Young Award, and the below information supports the cause.
FELIX HERNANDEZ | Cy Young Award
- The Record – 15-6, 2.14 ERA (56 ER, 236.0 IP) in 34 starts (27 quality starts).
- ERA Title – Claimed his second AL ERA title with a 2.14 mark ahead of Chris Sale (2.17).
- Low ERA – ERA of 2.14 was the lowest by an AL pitcher since Pedro Martinez recorded a 1.74 mark in 2000.
- Strong Finish – Posted a 1.66 ERA (7 ER, 38.0 IP) in 6 starts in September (2-1, 3 ND).
- WHIP Leader – Had the lowest WHIP in the AL at 0.915, the lowest by an AL pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2000 (0.737).
- AL Leaderboard – ERA (1st, 2.14), Opponent Batting Average (1st, .200), Innings (2nd, 236.0), Starts (T1st, 34), Strikeouts (4th, 248), Wins (T8th, 15), Strikeout-to-Walk Ratio (5th, 5.39), Strikeouts per 9.0 IP (5th, 9.46).
- The Felix Quality Start – Set a Major League record with 16 consecutive starts allowing 2 or fewer runs in at least 7.0 innings May 18-August 11…old record was 13 straight starts by Tom Seaver in 1971.
- 200 Strikeouts – Is the only pitcher to record 200 strikeouts in each of the last 6 seasons (since 2009)…recorded his 6th consecutive season exceeding 200 strikeouts and 200.0 innings pitched; tied for 3rd-longest streak in MLB history behind Tom Seaver (9, 1968-76), Roger Clemens (7, 19867-92) and Walter Johnson (7, 1910-16),
- Opponent Batting Average – Led the AL with a .200 opponent batting average.
- Opponent On-Base Pct – Recorded the lowest opponent on-base percentage in the AL at .243, the 3rd-lowest by an AL pitcher during the designated hitter era (since 1973), trailing only Pedro Martinez (.213 in 2000) and Justin Verlander (.242 in 2011).
- OPS & Slugging – Held opponents to a .546 OPS (2nd in AL) and .303 slugging percentage (2nd in AL).
- You’ll Get 7.0 – Pitched at least 7.0 innings in 24 of 34 starts, 2nd-best in AL (Price, 26).
- 2 of Fewer Runs Allowed – Allowed 2 or fewer runs in AL leading 25 starts (Kluber 2nd with 23).
- Team Leader – The Mariners were 22-12 when Felix started on the mound…posted an 8-4 record and 2.10 ERA in 19 starts following a Mariners team loss.
- No-Decision – Recorded a 1.88 ERA in 13 no-decisions (2.09 run support average in no-decisions).
- Sabermetrics – Ranked 6th in the AL in overall WAR (2nd amongst pitchers) at 6.2.
- All–Star Starter – Was the starting pitcher for the AL in the All-Star game in Minneapolis (scoreless inning, 2 K).

In today’s edition of USA Today, Felix Hernandez is featured in a nice article about his relationship with the City of Seattle and his loyalty to the Seattle Mariners. Felix will make his next start tomorrow vs. the Minnesota Twins, so come on out and be part of The King’s Court!
New York Times Features Felix Hernandez
Felix Hernandez will face off against fellow Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia tonight at Yankee Stadium (4:05 pm PT/7:05 pm ET). Felix has been fabulous in five career starts at the new Yankee Stadium, going 4-1 with a 1.31 ERA and a pair of 2-hit shutouts. Greg Bishop, a former writer for the Seattle Times, wrote a nice feature on Felix for this morning’s edition of The New York Times.

Mariners Spring Training Update – Day 1

Busy Day in Seattle with King Felix:
It was a special day back in Seattle as Felix Hernandez officially signed his seven-year contract extension making him a Mariner through the 2019 season. Those that get to be around Felix as much as we do not only know how great of a pitcher he is, but how equally great of a person he is. He treats us all the same, from the clubhouse staff to the PR staff, to his teammates, and we couldn’t be more proud to keep him in the family for at least seven more seasons. We included several photos from his news conference in Seattle, including the below photo when he was greeted by members of our front office after coming off the elevators. And here is the official news release that went out to the media this afternoon.

Getting on the Field:
It was the day that we wait for all winter, when Pitchers and Catchers (along with several position players) took to the back field at the Peoria Sports Complex for the first official day of Spring Training. Pitchers ran through PFP drills (Pitchers Fielding their Position), catchers caught bullpens and coaches roamed all the fields. A total of 16 pitchers threw their first bullpens of the spring, including newcomers Jon Garland and Kameron Loe, and Washington native Jeremy Bonderman.
After a 20-minute meeting in the clubhouse, the players hit the fields around 9:30 am and were kept busy until almost noon. This will be the normal routine for the next week until the first Cactus League game is played on Feb. 22 vs. the Padres.

Weather:
Well, the time has come where you may not want to read the weather section of this blog. Because today was “Bottle-it-up” perfect in my mind. Blue skies, sunny, and just a little crisp in the morning. Temperatures were in the mid 60’s for most of the day. We keep hearing that 70-degrees should be waiting for us this weekend!
It was nearly a perfect day as the Mariners took the field for the first time in 2013.
Another Roster Move:
The Mariners acquired minor league outfielder Abraham Almonte from the New York Yankees today in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Shawn Kelley. Kelley was designated for assignment when Kelly Shoppach was signed as a free agent.
Almonte, 23, spent last season primarily with Double-A Trenton in the Yankees organization. He hit .276 (88×319) with 47 runs scored, 17 doubles, 4 triples, 4 home runs, 25 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 78 games. The 5-9, 205-pound switch hitter was named an Eastern League midseason All-Star and ranked 5th in the EL in stolen bases (30-for-350. He also appeared in 7 games with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Yankees.

North Carolina vs. Duke:
Besides being the busy day with the first day of on-field workouts, it was a stressful day for Pitching Coach Carl Willis. Willis is probably one of the bigger University of North Carolina basketball fans that I’ve ever met, and I witnessed him personally act like a little kid when he met Tar Heel legend George Karl. At time of this blog posting the Tar Heels trailed Duke by 5 points, so hoping this turns around. Somewhere Kevin Millwood (huge Duke fan) is probably texting Carl to torment him.
Happy Birthday Julio:
Outfielder Julio Morban turned 21 today and was all smiles when manager Eric Wedge found him in the clubhouse to wish him a Happy Birthday.
On Tap Tomorrow (Feb. 14):
Tomorrow will be a pretty similar day in terms of timing, with the team taking the field at 9:30 am for stretch (on Field #3). A total of 15 pitchers are scheduled to have bullpen sessions, and this group will be fun to watch: Charlie Furbush, Josh Kinney, Erasmo Ramirez, Joe Saunders and Tom Wilhelmsen. Top prospects Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen, Brandon Maurer and James Paxton are also scheduled to get some extended mound time in.
Felix Hernandez – King of Seattle
Today Felix Hernandez signed a new, seven-year contract, the biggest in franchise history, which will keep him in a Mariners uniform through the 2019 season. Felix is truly the King of Seattle, and has embraced the community and the franchise since signing as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 2002. Here is a pictorial look at Felix celebrating many of his great moments in a Mariners uniform, and a look ahead to the many more that will come.
Mariners and Felix Reach Agreement
Felix Hernandez has become one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.
The big news of the day in Seattle (and Peoria), and well for that matter, the baseball world, is that the Mariners and ace right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez have reached an agreement on a new contract.
What exactly does that mean? Tomorrow Felix will sign the new contract and hold a news conference in Seattle beginning at 2 pm on Wednesday, February 13, at Safeco Field.
Stay tuned for more details about the big event, but in the meantime, just know that The King will be wearing a Mariners uniform for several more years (and let’s get the hashtag #KingOfSeattle trending!)
